Team HBV High School Chapters

Team HBV has outreach efforts on the high school level. Please read more about all the great things high school students are doing to raise awareness of Hepatitis B.

Team HBV High School

After the Youth Leadership Conference, many high school students become active leaders and empowered members of their community. These high school chapters work to raise awareness about hepatitis B, promote the ideals of the Jade Ribbon Campaign, and ultimately strive to better the health of the student body and the local community as it pertains to hepatitis B and liver cancer. Working with the Asian Liver Center and in conjunction with the Jade Ribbon Youth Council, high school chapters have been formed at many high schools in the Bay Area and some in other areas of the country, such as in Texas.

For the 2010-2011 school year, Team HBV High School Chapters is undergoing large structural changes, building the infrastructure and organization needed for Team HBV High School Chapters to create high impact for HBV outreach. Through collaboration with one another and the community, Team HBV High School Chapters intends to be model for health outreach at the high school level.

Central Goal:

  • Educate the campus and local communities about hepatitis B, prevention and treatment options.

Dougherty Chinese New Year Event

On February 12, Team HBV at Dougherty Valley High School set up a booth at a festival organized by the San Ramon Valley Chinese School for Chinese New Year. We used a marble game, in which children competed with one another to pick up as many marbles as possible with chopsticks within a set time, and gave out HBV pens as prizes to attract kids. While the parents watched their children play, club members educated them about Hepatitis B and gave out brochures. We required an email address from every player and ended with about 50 emails, to which we can send information about Hepatitis B and upcoming Team HBV events. We also passed out brochures that were attached to red packets containing candy to the audience and slipped brochures into the programs.

Gunn High School

What Stephanie, president of Team HBV at Gunn, has to say about the current school year: “Team HBV at Gunn was started three years ago by Esther Han and Brittany Chang. There were some difficulties getting started and in the end, the club generally hosted one big event each school year. This year, we decided to focus more on small-scale projects that would occur more frequently. At first, we had a hard time getting started because of the change in club officers. However, with cooperation and collaboration from our members, we were able to successfully pull off our first event of the semester -- the Pearl Milk Tea Fundraising and Awareness Event. We hope that our work this year will be passed on and improved for next year's Team HBV. Although most of the club officers and members are graduating this year, we are confident that the rest of the members will continue to spread hepatitis B Awareness at Gunn High School.”
